On the morning of our last day in ElSalvador, I was awake before sunrise. I went and stood at the water’s edge and looked out over the pacific ocean. The sound of the crashing waves created a white noise that helped to quiet some of the many thoughts racing around inside my head. I could feel the warmth of the sun on my back as the darkness of night faded away. I told myself to soak up as much of that Vitamin D as I could. Knowing that by day’s end I would be back in Ohio where the temperature was in the teens, the sky was gray and there would be no vitamin D to be found.
Thinking about vitamins reminded me of the days before I left to come to El Salvador. I noticed that I was getting a head cold so I began taking mega doses of Vitamin C to help my body fight off the germs. I was not looking forward to flying with a head cold or being miserable all week long.
Continuing with the vitamin theme, my thoughts switched back to El Salvador again. I thought about our group reflection the night before and about how so many people commented on the great amount of love they received from the people of El Salvador, people they did not know and who did not know them, and how that love has changed them and has brought about a sense of inner peace. It is good to give our bodies what they need in order to be strong and healthy, I thought. As human beings we need love, “Vitamin L”, to give it and to receive it. Without love we would die. If only we could contain it in a gel tab, put it in a bottle and sell it. We could have it to take, like any other vitamins, any time we feel depleted.
The people of El Salvador are so rich in this natural resource, if they could find a way to export their love and sell it to the rest of the world, they would be the wealthiest nation in the world. However, they do not seek to profit from their love, they give it freely, generously, and unconditionally as Jesus tells us in St.John, Chapter 15, verse 13, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
